Music Weekly: THE WIND LP, New Death Waltz Original + Distro Title!
News

This week, in conjunction with our friends at Lakeshore Records, we are proud to present the score to Emma Tammi’s folk horror masterpiece THE WIND. Featuring a super impressive score from Ben Lovett (THE RITUAL) and absolutely killer artwork by Candice Tripp, this release is limited to only 666 numbered copies.

In addition to the soundtrack we’ll also have a poster available featuring Candice Tripp’s stunning cover art for THE WIND. This has been an excellent year for horror so far, and THE WIND is one of our standouts. Candice's artwork beautifully captures the isolation and atmospheric tension that weaves through this tale of frontier terror.

We will also be releasing an all new Death Waltz Original - the debut album by BABii titled HiiDE. Lastly, we will be carrying the latest Data Discs release SONIC CD.

As usual, new releases go on sale on Wednesdays at NOON (CT) via mondotees.com.

NEW THIS WEEK

Emma Tammi’s supernatural Great Plains horror THE WIND expertly captures the austere isolation of life on the prairie in 19th Century America through the eyes of frontierswoman Lizzy Macklin (Caitlin Gerard). A key character in THE WIND is the haunting and often dissonant score from Ben Lovett (THE RITUAL). Using a bass flute, a traditional Swedish keyed violin called a Nyckelharpa, a handmade door bell, sound design, and non-traditional manipulation of orchestral music, Lovett brilliantly portrays the ominous sense of evil that permeates the sparse frontier.

The mysteries of the wind are always pervasive on Lovett’s score, which breathes a ferocious sense of foreboding into Tammi’s film. Each blast of the monstrous bass flute conjures the unforgiving demons said to haunt the plains. The bend of the bow on the often histrionic strings strikes an existentially eerie air. The percussion slaps us awake from our nightmares while simultaneously creating new ones.

“The film and Lovett's score show how isolation could be the greatest horror of all. The holes in human connection on the plains leave room for malevolent entities to fill in the gaps. Or maybe it’s just the wind.” (Aaron Vehling, Vehlinggo.com)

“HiiDE” is the debut album by electronic producer BABii, co-produced by Adrian Sherwood (On-U-Sound system). BABii produces incredibly forward-thinking electro tinged pop/R&B that features skittering beats and incredibly thick, layered synths with heavy bass and a semi-industrial feel to them. The lyrics are dark yet the vocals are sweet. Despite its incredible pop hooks, the whole LP drips with an undercurrent of darkness. BABii wowed SXSW this year playing 8 shows in 7 days, and was compared to everyone from Grimes to FKA Twigs. While these comparisons might give you a jumping off point, they also feel a bit lazy. BABii definitely inhabits her own unique world, and Death Waltz Originals are very excited to give you your first dive into it.

The original Japanese score from the classic Sonic the Hedgehog game, newly remastered and pressed on vinyl for the first time! An officially licensed SEGA product.

SONIC CD (also known as Sonic the Hedgehog CD) was originally released in 1993 for SEGA’s Mega-CD system. Based around a unique time travel concept, SONIC CD is the most non-linear of the classic Sonic games. The music, composed by Naofumi Hataya and Masfumi Ogata, brilliantly reflects the shifting tones and alternate paths of the game. The score accompanied both the Japanese and European versions of the game, but was subsequently re-written (by different composers) for the US release.

The remastered edition of the original Japanese score is presented as a triple 180 Gram Vinyl LP in a heavyweight single pocket sleeve, with a newly arranged track list based around the game’s different “Time Zones,” to provide a different listening experience from previous releases. It is accompanied by three double-sided art prints, featuring original artwork from the SEGA archives, exclusive liner notes by composer Naofumi Hataya, a bespoke etching design on Side F and a download code for the album in both lossy and lossless formats.
