Based on the short story “Super-Toys Last All Summer Long” by Brian Aldiss, Warner Bros.’ 2001 science-fiction drama A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE was originally conceived as a Pinocchio-esque fairy tale by Stanley Kubrick. Programmed to love unconditionally, David, a child robot, is abandoned when the human son he’s replaced miraculously returns home. David’s ensuing odyssey of self-discovery endures as one of Spielberg’s most groundbreaking films, a darkly poetic story of 21st century identity.
John Williams’ otherworldly score is not only crucial in establishing A.I.’s brave new world, it keeps us firmly hand-in-hand with David on his extraordinary journey.
