FREDDY VS JASON - ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK LP (Death Waltz Recording Co.)
Music by Graeme Revell. Artwork by Gary Pullin. Liner notes by J. Blake Fichera. Initial pressing of 1000 copies, pressed on Red, Green and Silver vinyl. Limit one per person. $30
Directed by Hong Kong action director Ronnie Yu, score duties for this showdown went to veteran composer Graeme Revell, who scored Yu’s previous film BRIDE OF CHUCKY. With FREDDY VS. JASON, Graeme Revell had big shoes to fill. The Elm Street series had featured scores by such prominent composers as Christopher Young, Angelo Badalamenti, Craig Safan and Brian May, and Charles Bernstein’s themes for the original 1984 film had become iconic amongst the franchise’s fans.
Likewise, upon the release of the first Friday the 13th film, Harry Manfredini’s hallmark “Ki Ki Ki, Ma Ma Ma” vocal motif quickly made his score one of the most recognizable in all of horror, if not cinema in general. So, taking on a project combining two of the film industry’s longest-running franchises with such rich musical histories was no easy feat.
Revell rose to the challenge with a score that manages to feel familiar without ever relying on the work of previous composers to do the heavy lifting. His musical nods to earlier films are brief but very effective. Though heavily weighted in the world of classical music, Revell’s score for Freddy vs. Jason, like much of his other work, is a progressive hybrid of eclectic sounds, instruments, and styles. It features lush orchestral pieces, as well as horror staples like screeching strings and atmospheric drones.
Revell frequently builds tension and intensity by incorporating digital samples and rigorous EDM and Industrial rhythm beds. He even managed to slip in some blues and heavy metal guitar. It is a powerful and effective musical work created by an exceptionally imaginative composer for one of the most anticipated horror films of all time.
Now, finally making its long-awaited debut on vinyl, it is a worthwhile treat for all horror lovers, soundtrack collectors, and vinyl heads alike. (J. Blake Fichera)
BROADCAST SIGNAL INTRUSION - ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK LP (Death Waltz Recording Co.)
Music by Ben Lovett. Artwork by Sister Hyde. Edition of 500. $30
BROADCAST SIGNAL INTRUSION features composer Ben Lovett!s trumpet-driven, noir-inspired original score to director Jacob Gentry’s 70s style, paranoia-infused conspiracy thriller. Lovett and Gentry last collaborated on the 2016 time travel mystery, SYNCHONICITY, for which Lovett received a nomination for “Discovery of the Year” at the prestigious World Soundtrack Awards. This score marks the composer and director’s ninth film together, dating back over 20 years.
Where the music for SYNCHONICITY channelled the Blade Runner-inspired synthesizer sounds of Vangelis, BROADCAST SIGNAL INTRUSION finds Lovett reaching even further into the past, with a blend of post-jazz mixed with classic Hollywood noir, to create a sound uniquely its own.
A distinctly Lovett combination of brass, piano, percussion, and strings smashed and smeared onto old VHS recorders, this score captures the hum and hiss of a bygone era.
MONSTERLAND - ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK LP (Death Waltz Recording Co.)
Music by Gustavo Santaolalla. Artwork by Matt Ryan Tobin. Pressed on 140 Gram Oil Slick vinyl. Numbered edition of 500. $30.
In conjunction with Lakeshore Records, we are thrilled to bring you the score to Hulu's incredible and unsettling anthology series from 2020, featuring a profoundly affecting score by Gustavo Santaolalla (THE LAST OF US).
“When I was approached to participate in MONSTERLAND, I was immediately attracted to the idea of working on a series where horror, science fiction and gore could converge. I had never made music for a project like this before, and the sole idea of venturing into some new playground immediately sparked my interest. And just after reading the first two episodes, I realized I had to get involved in the project. Several things connected the characters’ psyches in the stories that reminded me of the “magical realism” that I grew up with in Latin America, through writers like Horacio Quiroga and Gabriel García Márquez.
"Also, the idea of tapping into a landscape in which fear and horror have a metaphysical quality connected to the characters’ psyche appealed to me. Working with Juan Luquí was key in making this score. His capacity to deeply understand my vision added another dimension to MONSTERLAND: a land of monsters so human in nature that seemed extremely and frighteningly familiar.” (Gustavo Santaolalla, 2021)

HALLOWEEN KILLS - ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK LP (Sacred Bones)
Music by John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter & Daniel Davies. Limited pressing of 500, on Orange and Black Splatter vinyl. $28
It’s just five notes plucked out on a piano, so sparsely arranged that it feels like barely more than a sketch, so simple that an untrained player can easily pick it up. Still, it’s one of cinema’s most significant musical accomplishments. By now, John Carpenter’s hypnotic theme to his 1978 horror masterpiece Halloween has embodied slasher-stalker anxiety for generations of filmgoers and woven itself so into pop culture that it’s become musical shorthand for the entire horror genre.
And, like the seemingly unkillable Michael Myers, it’s back once again. Carpenter’s score to the second installment of the new Halloween trilogy, HALLOWEEN KILLS, stays true to the spirit of what made the 1978 original great, while bringing it firmly into the present. The music is unmistakably Carpenter: the sinister vintage synth tones, the breath-stealing sense of menace that he conjures with just a few dissonant notes, but with a broader sonic palette, new digital techniques at his disposal, and a deeper sense of musicality, the HALLOWEEN KILLS score is the work of a master artist who, nearly 50 years into his career, continues to push his creative limits and find new ways to thrill and terrify his fans.
