Music Weekly: LUCY IN THE SKY, FIRST MAN, & MAN-THING for Earth Day
News

Hi everyone. We're excited to present two out-of-this-world releases for this Wednesday, Earth Day – an under-heard gem from last year, Jeff Russo's terrific score for last year's LUCY IN THE SKY pressed on Star Field vinyl. and a re-press of Justin Hurwitz's Golden Globe-winning score for Damien Chazelle's 2018 Neil Armstrong biopic, FIRST MAN.

Rounding out the Earth Day offerings, we've also got an enamel pin for the Marvel universe's most famous swamp-infused scientist – MAN-THING. The talented artist Dan Hipp has depicted the kinder side of this empathic humanoid, crawling out of the Florida everglades with a lovely bouquet.

As always, all new releases and restocks go on sale on Wednesdays at Noon CT.

In keeping with our yearly tradition, Mondo will donate a portion of Earth Day proceeds to the Austin Parks Foundation. We all miss our beautiful outdoor spaces while we stay safely at home, and hope to contribute to their maintenance in this time of need so we can someday graze the wildflowers with Man-Thing again.

Oh, and in case you missed it – Mondo Music and Playtone have been hard at work to produce the premiere vinyl edition of the soundtrack to THAT THING YOU DO! for several months. We still aren't ready to share the finished product, but in partnership with the cast and crew and their epic reunion, we're donating one of the album test pressings to be auctioned off for the MusiCares Foundation charity. More details here.

NEW RELEASES

LUCY IN THE SKY - ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK 2XLP. Music by Jeff Russo. Artwork by Jasmin Darnell. Pressed on 2x 180 Gram Star Field Vinyl (limited to 300 copies worldwide). Also available on 2x 180 Gram Black vinyl. $35.

Mondo Music, in partnership with Lakeshore Music, is proud to present the premiere vinyl pressing of Jeff Russo's score to the 2019 film by Noah Hawley, LUCY IN THE SKY. The film is a sad but beautiful fable about failure, double standards, and achievement, but the score is never bleak because the film itself is always hopeful and curious. Anchored by swelling synths and echoing choruses, the score is tranquil and sublime. An underrated and under-heard collection of film music we are super proud to share.

FIRST MAN - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack LP. Music by Justin Hurwitz. Front cover illustration by Marc Aspinall. Pressed on 180 Gram Lunar Surface colored vinyl. Also available on 180 Gram Black vinyl. $25

Mondo, in partnership with Back Lot Music, is proud to present a new pressing of the original motion picture soundtrack to Damien Chazelle's film FIRST MAN on vinyl. The soundtrack features new music from two-time Academy Award®-winner Justin Hurwitz, as well as a recording of Leon Bridges performing “Whitey on the Moon,” in character as Gil Scott Heron.

On the heels of their six-time Academy Award®-winning smash, LA LA LAND, Oscar®-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling re-team for FIRST MAN - the riveting story behind the manned-mission to the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the decade leading up to the historic Apollo 11 flight. It's visceral and intimate account told from Armstrong’s perspective, based on the book by James R. Hansen. The film explores the triumphs and the cost on Armstrong, his family, his colleagues and the nation itself of one of the most dangerous missions in history.

The film’s harmonious score features orchestra mixed with vintage electronics, including the Theremin. Regarding that choice of instrumentation, Hurwitz said, “As soon as I found the main theme at the piano, Damien suggested using a Theremin to express that melody throughout the movie. I got one and started learning to play it and loved how emotional and expressive the instrument could be. With its wailing quality, we were able to capture the type of cosmic pain that suited Neil’s story.”

Featuring original front cover illustration by Marc Aspinall and pressed on 180 Gram Lunar Surface Grey vinyl. Also available on 180 Gram Black vinyl.
