That's not all ... we are excited to finally release our exclusive colorway of Brian Metolius' score to Patrick Willems' debut feature NIGHT OF THE COCONUT (number six on Letterboxd's list of “2022 Highest Rated Narrative Directorial Debuts”)!

Those familiar with the incredible work of Nathan Johnson will not be surprised by his melody-forward approach to such a dark and cynical film. Occasionally bleak but always gorgeous, the film delivers on its promise of grifters and hubris, but Nathan's score balances the equation with a propulsive and somber and simple score. Nathan Johnson and Guillermo Del Toro made beautiful music together. It is a brilliant partnership, one that I hope continues into future productions.

NIGHT OF THE COCONUT - ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK LP
How do you succinctly describe NIGHT OF THE COCONUT? Over the course of the last three years, filmmaker and film essayist Patrick Willems has been crafting a metanarrative across his dozens of YouTube videos involving an evil, fame-seeking interdimensional being named Charl. What started as a short film to wrap up loose ends became a feature length film - Patrick's first.
Those who are familiar with Patrick Willem's videos will appreciate the meta aspect of this story, but the real-life narrative that led to the production of this film is equally fascinating. He has produced several videos about the behind-the-scenes aspects that are just as interesting as the essays he produces himself. (His most recent deep dive into Michael Bay's AMBULANCE made me reconsider that film's excellence!) It's simultaneously a deep dive into how the collaborative nature of filmmaking, storytelling, and criticism interact with each other, while also being a fun story about a floating coconut with plans to take over the world.
Brian Metolius, Patrick's long-time composer, has put together a score and soundtrack that is equal parts sci-fi synthcore, and full-on campy musical. It's John Carpenter meets Adam Schlesinger's work on CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND. Everything about this project and release is so singular and important, we are proud to be the home of the soundtrack to this film (NIGHT OF THE COCONUT is streaming exclusively on NEBULA).
Featuring original artwork by Colin Murdoch and pressed on Mondo Exclusive Coconut Brown vinyl (limited to 200 copies), we hope this is not the introduction of the work of Patrick Willems to you. But if it is, welcome to the club. As fans of film, this is a perfect place to start.
