Bullhead (2011) marks Michaël R. Roskam’s first full-length film and earned him his first Oscar nomination in the category ‘Best International Feature Film’. His soundtrack creator is musical philosopher Raf Keunen, with whom he had previously collaborated on three short films. The catch? This composer had never written for an orchestra before.
Bullhead features a 100% acoustic score, without electronics. With a conscious choice for strings, brass here and there, piano, harp, and percussion. In short, instruments that fit the dramatic narrative. “In the end I asked pianist Alain Franco to pan out my orchestration and conduct the orchestra. He immediately assured me: this is going to work.”
