Everyone’s favorite felons are back, and this time, they’ve got company.
In the new action-packed chapter from DreamWorks Animation’s acclaimed comedy smash about a crackerjack crew of animal outlaws, our now-reformed Bad Guys are trying (very, very hard) to be good, but instead find themselves hijacked into a high-stakes, globe-trotting heist, masterminded by a new team of criminals they never saw coming: The Bad Girls.
Music has always played a significant role in The Bad Guys universe—not just as background, but as a driving force of style, emotion and character. For returning Oscar® nominated Composer Daniel Pemberton, scoring the sequel meant expanding that sound into something more ambitious, more cinematic and more unpredictable. “The first film had a strong homage to the world of heist movies, but this one dramatically expands the landscape,” Pemberton says. “The characters are already established, so there were so many new worlds to explore—from the world of lucha libre to soaring across Egypt and, of course, eventually heading into space.”
To capture that expanded vision, Pemberton leaned into a process that mirrors the way animated films are built: in layers. “Daniel doesn’t record everything at once,” Director Pierre Perifel says. “He starts with guitars, then builds on top of that with drums, strings, winds. By the time we record it all live, you are hearing something that feels alive. It has shape and personality. And it lifts the entire film.” Perifel also points to Pemberton’s instinct for innovation as key to the score’s energy. “He is constantly asking himself what he hasn’t done yet,” Perifel says. “He brings that energy into every session. He is not just scoring a film—he is playing with it, throwing out ideas on the spot, trying new things with the musicians. That kind of spontaneity, paired with his musical skill, makes the whole score feel fresh.”
